Abstract
The increasing availability of digital and digitalized sources has brought on decisive changes in musicological studies. This applies not only to the accessibility of sources through the Internet, but also a broadening of the field's methodology through digital editions and music encoding or the need for the conservation and analysis of digital sources (e.g. computer programs written by composers). This article deals with the current standards and potential formats for presenting sources on the Internet in the future; with new opportunities for music editions using the software Edirom; and with the prospects for encoded prototype editions of opera music.
